The Regional Collection Center collects household hazardous materials from residents in Cedar, Clinton, Jackson, and Jones Counties.
What is a Household Hazardous Material?
Household hazardous materials can be defined as household products that contain one or more of the following characteristics:
Combustible - Capable of being easily set on fire.
Corrosive- Capable of burning or destroying living tissues and materials by means of a chemical reaction.
Reactive- Capable of exploding if exposed to heat or extreme pressure. May react violently when exposed to incompatible materials.
Toxic - The ability to cause severe injury or death if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin.
Common Household Hazardous Materials Include:
Household Cleaners: Used in the kitchen or bathroom, drain cleaners and floor and furniture polishes, etc.
Home Improvement: Products such as oil-based paint, stains, varnish, and adhesives, etc.
Automotive Products: Gasoline, cleaners and wax, brake fluid, and body putty, etc.
Pesticides: Insect repellants, weed killers, moth balls, mouse poison and various garden products, etc.
MISC: Pool Chemicals, photo chemicals, and artist paints,etc.
